Kim Gromoll
This moth called: Noctua pronuba/ large yellow und This moth called: Noctua pronuba/ large yellow underwing/ huismoeder/ Hausmutter,
I've found in August 2020 in a small village next to saxon switzerland national park in eastern germany. After almost 4 month encased in it's glass cocoon mold started to grow. Something I did not expect in this case, since the moth seemed to be completely dried out when put in the cocoon. A wonderful visible state of her transformation. I am looking forward to future changes within this little ecosystem.

This queen wasp was put in her cocoon just one day This queen wasp was put in her cocoon just one day after she died. (I found her weakend and already in the process of dying, put her in a save spot in the garden and the next morning she was dead)
Not completely dried out at this state, her body with all the moist and bacteria is slowly transforming. On the Foto her body resides in the cocoon for around 4 month already.

How much attention do we pay to the environment that surrounds us? Are you aware of the nature that you encounter everyday?

Kim Gromoll´s artistic practice is built upon peculiar personal captivations with subjects in nature that are often overlooked yet may be found abundantly even in the most common of places.

The foundation for eventual works is laid down by a methodical approach consisting of the collecting, preserving and analyzing of various natural objects. As such her artworks exist of minimal interventions in order to illuminate an aspect, display it in the most genuine manner and are often identified as vulnerable, fragile and delicate, yet carrying immense beauty but also simultaneously showing natural vitality & strength.

To experience them is in essence an opportunity to widen your perception to aspects of life we’ve seemingly long forgotten or lost sight of. The act of giving attention, seeing the unseen, may be described as liberating as you once again become more susceptible to the natural expressions and aesthetics that may be found on all sensory planes around us.

Gromoll herself states that as an artist she does not aim to create. She simply allows her subjects and materials to communicate.”

Communions, 2020 [shortened text version. For the Communions, 2020

[shortened text version. For the full version please visit my website.]

During a two week residency in Saxon Switzerland national park I found myself in the small village of Wehlen which is situated along the river Elbe. One of my main activities was to explore the local flora, fauna and the natural history.

A rich diversity of wild herbs and edible plants was to be found along the riverside. Many of which are commonly considered to be weeds, but may in fact prove themselves to be amongst some of the most nutritious food sources for both animal and human alike. Trace elements, enzymes and bioactive substances which are no longer to be found in cultivated vegetables and produce are however still present in the aforementioned “weeds”. A knowledge which has slowly drifted away over time as we turn a blind eye in favor of the comfortability of mass production, homogenization and mono cultures.
For this work I was also inspired by an ancient group of people known as the essenes. Among other subjects my main interest was in the stories of their so called essene bread. Made from purely sprouted seeds and dried or “baked” in the sun it was able to preserve all essential nutrients.

This ancient method of sprouting and sundrying in combination with wild & locally foraged ingredients resulted in my own take on the essene bread. A main component was an ancient sort of rye locally known as “Waldstaudenroggen” which may be found at the edge of the forest and open clearings nearby.
Those activated grains together with a mixture of wild plants & herbs formed the dough.

The third component consisted of a former inhabitant of the area, (dried) algae.
A subtle reference to the great chalk sea which shaped this landscape ca. 90 million years ago.

A bite sized piece of the bread was served with wild nettle pesto on one half and local honey on the other half.

The presentation took place on a field next to the river Elbe and offered visitors a pure & raw tasting experience which reflects upon the present & past, the local landscape and how we relate to it.

The Garden Of My Existence, 2020 The garden of my The Garden Of My Existence, 2020

The garden of my existence is an ever evolving project with no set destination but rather focuses on the journey itself. At its core lies the question and search for what this garden may entail, as such it is the path taken and those to come that define the contents.
On a seemingly intangible and transient plane we find a place of growth. A place of the mind, the spirit as well as the body. Challenging many aspects of the modern world and the ever increasing desire for globalization & progress, the garden comes into being through personal choices and habits. The act of consciously pacing ourselves differently, contrasting the tendencies of instant gratification & consumerism, allows for us to connect and show attentiveness towards our environment and gain a better understanding of what we take in. By doing so we become susceptible to the garden and its fruits which lay waiting at the periphery of our modern reality.

The garden of my existence is open to everyone that is curious and wishes to join in. Each participant receives a postcard with instructions and a small package containing one seed.
As the seed slowly grows into a full size plant when properly cared for, and through the relationship maintained with your plant, a part of the garden may reveal itself over time.
With the continued spreading of seeds amongst new participants and a variety of locations the project transcends boundaries or duration.

As a participant you are kindly requested to forward anything you deem noteworthy about the process in a way you see fit!
The collection of submitted photos, text, sketches & scribbles together form a visualization of the evolution of the garden.

If you wish to contribute to the project and receive a postcard, please send me your name and address.

Your data will be used exclusively for this one time participation and will be deleted afterwards.
Canang Sari, 2020 During my time in Bali [Indone Canang Sari, 2020

During my time in Bali [Indonesia] I encountered many daily offerings locally known as “Canang Sari”. This practice of giving thanks stems from a local combination of beliefs such as a distinct form of Hindu worship, animism, ancestor worship and reverence for Buddhist.
The “Canang Sari” can be made for all kinds of reasons and occasions. Traditionally a little basket generally consisting of banana & coconut leafs is handmade everyday and holds the offering. The often colourful and lively looking offerings may be found at home or in the immediate vicinity to your house.
At work or in the main street. At the front door or in the garden. They are placed and prayers spoken in order to please the gods and bring luck & good fortune for people, other living beings, this specific location and its energy.

In its current iteration local plants, candy & other natural objects are brought together with several traditional aspects in order to find a balanced mix between the present western culture and the offerings eastern origin. By combining our own environment with the experiences and the mindset encountered in Indonesia, Canang Sari intends to instill similar gratitude and respect towards our surrounding world.
To inspire a different approach and connection with nature in both a physical and spiritual sense.

The most recent offering presented at TAC Eindhoven is a personal take on what a Canang Sari may bring to a social event such as this exhibition and wishes well upon all present artists, visitors and the space.

As contribution to the #artistsupportpledge @artis As contribution to the #artistsupportpledge @artistsupportpledge I decided to sell some of my works from the serie “veritas” within the guidelines of the #artistsupportpledge
If interested please send me a DM or email (kim-gromoll@gmx.de) with the work you would like to purchase. All prices are incl. 9% taxes and excl. shipping costs.
All works are signed on the back and come with a little wooden holder.
7 x 7 cm, diaframe & plant, 150€ each
Sustainability is an important part for me as an artist and also as person. Within my practice I sometimes use reclaimed materials, in this case the mentioned works contain reused old diaframes. There are some marks of their previous owner & uses, however I see these traces as an added aesthetic rather than “damage”. Some of the traces of use are not visible on the pictures.
For “Veritas”  flowers, leafs and other plant parts are placed in diaframes. Detached from their natural environment they are now single entities on which we may focus our attention.  Initially mold appears, their original colours fade and new ones emerge as a specimen ultimately becomes completely dried out, only a semi-transparant silhouette remains.

Please be aware that the color of the works in the picture might have changed, or will continue changing over time.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many artists have found themselves without work, teaching, technical support, gallery work. Exhibitions and sales have disappeared. In an attempt to help alleviate some of this stress @matthewburrowsstudio has instigated the ARTIST SUPPORT PLEDGE #artistsupportpledge
The concept is a simple one. You post images of your work you are willing to sell for no more than £200/ 200€ each (not including shipping.) Every time you reach £1000 of sales you pledge to buy another artist's work for £200 / 200€. So make a pledge and post your work with the #artistsupportpledge follow @matthewburrowsstudio to keep updated and the # to see everyone else's work. Repost and tell your friends, co
